UPDATE: THE GEELONG WATERFRONT SAFE HARBOUR PRECINCT PROJECT

Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) is pleased to confirm the commencement of construction for the Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour Precinct Project (GWSHPP) Sailing School and OTB Building.

The GWSHPP is a unique private – public partnership creating a new public realm in the centre of the Geelong CBD. This project is aimed at improving the waterfront landscape and accessibility whilst continuing to provide the necessary functionality of the “safe harbour” for local and visiting boats through the already completed floating pen marina system and Wangim Walk.

The GWSHPP also includes the development of new Victoria Sailing School (VSS) facilities. VSS is operated in partnership with Newcomb Secondary College which delivers programs for over 2,000 students from 60 schools in Victoria!

Whilst there have been delays in getting to this point, RGYC is proud of the work that has been undertaken by a key group of members and staff to ensure that this important club and community project becomes a reality.

We are excited to welcome OTTO Construction Group on board as the confirmed builder for the project. OTTO began preliminary site works on November 3rd, 2023.

Since then, activity has been well underway with the installation of site sheds and exterior wooden fence hoarding to secure the site ahead of the build. The east access gate to RGYC has also been relocated and the eastern car park is now closed as the site starts to take shape.

This is a period of change and adaptation across RGYC and the Geelong waterfront, but these exciting changes to the site act as a positive reminder of the of the importance of what is being undertaken with the GWSHPP and the future ongoing positive impact the project will have on the Geelong community now and into the future.
